I meet tons of people who want to be professional singers but they really don’t know where to begin. Some people have sung most of their lives while others have decided to do a career change. Whatever the reason or motivation for pursuing music, I believe that each person’s path is an individual one.
When I first began pursuing a professional career, I really didn’t have any idea on where or how to begin. As a result, I spent a lot of time trying to find my way by doing lots of different types of things related to singing. From these experiences, I learned a lot about myself and where I did and didn’t fit in. More importantly, I allowed myself to step outside of my own box in order to find out what really worked for me and my voice. As a result, I believe that I have finally found my niche as a singer/songwriter.
The best piece of advice I can give any singer who wants to create a career for his/herself is as follows…”Do everything, do nothing, and then do something”. I am basically saying explore and make some decisions about what it is you are willing to do and what it is you don’t want to do. This is not the “American Idol Fix” you see on TV but this is a methodical, sensible way of exploring the possibilities of a music career.
